The National Defense Center of Excellence for Research in Ocean

Sciences (CEROS) is a unique technology development program between

the State of Hawaii and the federal Defense Advanced Research Projects

Agency (DARPA). CEROS demonstrates that the State can be responsive

to the needs of the Department of Defense for state-of-the-art ocean

technology. Since 1993 CEROS has funded 130 technical projects for

about $50.6 million. Diverse products and capabilities result from

CEROS support, including advanced submarine or airborne sensors and

information processors, advanced hull designs, new ocean instruments

and analytic tools, and even potential antibiotics from marine algae.

Many of these products have progressed to advanced development

programs or dual-use (military/commercial)applications.
