WELCOMEThe magnificence of Tokyo will again greet international experts as they attend the third Underwater Technology symposium in April 2002,one of the most pleasant months in Japan. This highly successful symposium, is organized by the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES), its Tokyo Chapter, the University of Tokyo's Institute of Industrial Science, and the U.S. Office of Naval Research Asian Office, along with host organizations from several countries. "Technology for the Last Frontier" will provide a thematic umbrella under which attendees will discuss the problems and potential long term solutions that concern not only the Pacific Rim countries, but the world in general in areas that include underwater acoustics and signal processing, observation, construction, positioning, vehicles & robotics and bio-related technology. The four day event is scheduled for 16-19 April 2002. Nearly 200 attendees from 17 countries enjoyed 82 technical presentations at the second successful conference in this series, UT '00, also held in Tokyo. The number of papers accepted for this year’s event will again result in parallel sessions that will be highlighted by four keynote presentations from representatives from Japan, Taiwan, Korea and the United States. April is famous for cherry blossoms and special events, and, once again, the symposium venue will be the exquisite New Sanno Hotel. Attendees will also have an opportunity to visit area attractions including technical tour visits to National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) at Tuskuba City, and other historical and cultural attractions around the Tokyo area. In addition, a separate follow-on workshop on Advances in Ocean Monitoring
and Exploration for the New Century will be held on 22-23 April in Taipei,
Taiwan. Don't miss out on these premier international events. For more
